This week’s Boss Lady Spotlight Joy Randolph has an amazing story of how she was able to push through a difficult time and bounce back to run her business. Joy Randolph is a Branding & Growth Consultant for entrepreneurs, executives, and professionals who want to become experts in leaders in their field. She teaches them how to create a brand people love, grow their business and become influential in their field so they can make the positive difference they want to see in the world.
What inspired you to start your business?
I was inspired one summer Friday afternoon. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was on annual leave and was burned out from my job. At the time I was a consultant for global brands. Though I loved my clients, I felt exhausted and it showed. I gained 20lbs, had no time for my relationship and was unhappy with my life … I didn’t know why I was working so hard. So I grabbed my laptop to watch a webinar by Gabby Bernstein on finding your purpose and it changed everything for me.
She taught me when you’re anxious and unhappy, something isn’t aligned with your life. I learned it’s important to not ignore these feelings, and instead ask for guidance on what to do with your career and life. I didn’t know what to do … The only thing I knew was I wanted to be the light I wanted to see in the world. I didn’t know what this meant.
But I knew it would require stepping out of the comfort of the 9 to 5 world I knew so that I could re-gift my gifts to people instead of big corporates.
What was the hardest part of starting your business?
Making money. I spent a lot of time blogging, creating videos, networking, posting on social media… basically doing all the things I thought would generate income, only to make $0.
On top of that, I got diagnosed with a rare borderline cancerous tumor and needed major surgery to remove it to avoid cancer. My recovery took 9 months and I couldn’t work for this period. Having this happen in my first year of business, made me want to quit.
But when I wanted to give up, I’d remember why I started this business a consultant and why it was important to me and my husband that I keep going.
How do you manage your time as a consultant?
I focus on getting the most important tasks that’ll help generate income done. And I also have a system for creating content so I can work on the slow-burning activities too. The Productivity Planner (and batching my work) helps me get a lot done. For example, I can film 5 videos and edit 2 videos all in one day. Prior to this, it’d take one day to film and edit one video.
Do you have a balance?
Yes! It’s a must! After getting my tumor, I realized good health and a happy marriage is everything to me. If I mess any of these things up, everything else falls apart. For example, when I had the tumor, I couldn’t work for 9 months. That affected my marriage and my business. And if my marriage was to fall apart, I wouldn’t have the love of my life to enjoy my life with.
So yes, I make time for my health and husband. A lot of entrepreneurs, businesswomen, and professionals struggle with this.
What is the most important thing you learned outside of school?
Not everyone will like you. In school, I thought it was important that everyone liked you. But I’ve learned doing what everyone else is doing to be liked stops you from being yourself.
How do you wish to impact your community/the world with what you’re offering as a Branding and Growth Consultant? What’s your ultimate goal?
My mission is to produce the next generation of world changers. It’s a big mission … which is good because I have the rest of my life to focus on this.
What it looks like in practical terms is helping entrepreneurs, executives and senior professionals become leaders in their industry. I work with people who want to make a positive difference in the world and I give them the education and training to become leaders in the field they care about most.
I help startups, charities and small businesses who are offering services that will solve social, cultural and environmental issues. I offer branding and growth services to help them become leaders in their industry and make the biggest impact they can.
Choose one:
- Cook or Eat out: Cooking (of course!) I love making healthy, natural and homemade food. To me, it’s a good week if we eat in every day of the week.
- Shop in-store or Online: Online! I buy everything online. From toothpaste to clothes to journals and groceries.
- Book or Kindle: Really, I prefer Audiobooks so I can listen to them while I’m walking or cycling. But if I had to choose one, I prefer books to kindles. A home isn’t a home without a bookshelf
- Netflix or Hulu: Netflix! We don’t get Hulu in the UK and that makes me so sad. I’d finish Scandal!
- Sweet or Salty: Salty. I love fries with salt and struggle to give them up.
- Sneakers or heels: You’re killing me. Sneakers… (but a woman always needs a great collection of heels to wear to meetings and date nights)
