I’m super excited about this week’s Boss Lady Highlight! I might be a little biased because I know her, but she is a bomb Boss Lady! Aggie, also known as NurseAggz, is a labor and delivery nurse, aspiring midwife and family nurse practitioner. She creates videos to hopefully inspire and encourage those entering the nursing field and adulting world. Not only does she work as a labor and delivery nurse, create content for others, but she just recently started back school to further her education! I hope you enjoy this interview!
What inspired you to start Nurse Aggz, and how did you get started?
I am a big youtube fan. I watch it for leisure, inspiration, and educational purposes. I also am a fan of mentorship. I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career without the support and guidance of some incredible women. Therefore, I wanted to use a platform that I’ve grown to love to share personal experiences and pieces of advice to hopefully inspire and guide others entering the nursing and adult world. How did I get started? One day I just decided to put thought into action. I whipped out my iPad mini and filmed my very first video: “Labor and Delivery Nursing: How to get hired as a new graduate”. The video quality is trash, I definitely don’t look a beauty vlogger, but the content has been surprisingly helpful to others who aspire to be a labor and delivery nurse which makes me happy.
Did you always know you wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse? If not, what did your journey look like to get here?
Not at all. I avoided this profession growing up thinking it was too cliche because my mom and sister were nurses. However, I always had a fascination with childbirth as a kid and into adulthood. A nurse midwife was a guest speaker in one of my college courses and I fell in love with her work. After job shadowing her over the summer, volunteering as a prenatal instructor and birth doula I knew I wanted to care for women in their families throughout the childbearing years and nursing was the route I wanted to take.
Did you feel prepared when you got your first full-time nursing position? What helped you feel confident about your skills?
Nope. Luckily my job started off as a 5-month residency program which means my training lasted for almost half a year! During this period I learned how to somewhat do my job and navigate the unit. By the time residency was over, I still didn’t feel prepared, BUT I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be and I would gain more confidence with experience. Needless to say, I have been constantly learning ever since :).
What is your ultimate dream job?
To travel and help people. I know, not very specific, but that’s the most accurate answer I have right now 🙂
Who are a few Boss Ladies that you look up to or that inspire you?
Amy Macdonald–the midwife that welcomed me with open arms into my profession. she is SO good at what she does. She’s the person that makes me goes,”I want to be like you when I grow up” because she has such good bedside manner and so knowledgeable about women’s health and the birthing experience. My sisters who both have husbands who travel for work and who both kill it as mom and health professionals. Finally, one of my favorite beauty vloggers, Kyra Knox. I’ve been watching her from the beginning of her YT journey and it has been so inspiring to watch her channel and platform grow over the years. She’s a true hustler and Boss Lady.
What was the hardest part about starting Nurse Aggz?
Being consistent! I bet this is a popular answer for any blogger but it is so true! it gets challenging trying to balance work, family, friends, fun, and vlogging. Every week is a working progress.
What are your goals for the year?
To expand my reach on Youtube and connect with more individuals on my other social media platforms. I hope to do so by improving the quality of my YT videos and publishing videos weekly. Also, as I start graduate school this fall I hope to achieve a balance between work, school, family/friends, and vlogging.
What’s your favorite: Book, Podcast, Blog, Movie?
Book- The Giver. Podcast: currently is The Breakfast Club, blog: Boss Lady Brand, and movie: the lion king. **I promise I didn’t bribe her to say this blog lol
What is one change you would like to see in the world?
People being more empathetic towards others. I believe most of our world’s problems would be solved with just a little more understanding of people who don’t look/believe/act like we do.
What is the most important thing you learned outside of school?
Invest in yourself– physically, emotionally, professionally, and spiritually. If you don’t how can you expect others to?
How do you hope to impact others with your platform?
I hope to normalize and alleviate some of the anxiety and stress that comes with starting a new career or simply being an adult by providing pieces of advice and tips that have worked for me.
