A vision board can really help you take your goals to the next level! If you have a vision board it will help clearly see what you’re working towards. When you make a vision board it makes your goals seem realistic and attainable.
What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is either a physical or digital board where you put visual representations of what your goals and aspirations are. You can create your dream life and display it on this board. Every time you look at this board you can look at it to feel inspired and motivated.
You can make a vision board for anything! It could be your wedding or you can have one for your overall life or break down for the current year or even a 5 year plan.
Why Should I Make a Vision Board?
You should make one because when you can visually see your “why” every single day, it can help push you to continue to work hard towards your goals even when you don’t want to. When you can look at your goals, and really visualize the outcomes you want, your brain will start to do the work for you and you will be moving towards your goals.
How to Make a Vision Board
List out everything you want in your dream life
Ask yourself the hard questions! Like the really hard ones where you talk about what you actually want out of life. Don’t limit yourself or your dreams. Figure out what you want, that thing that crazy idea that you don’t even say out loud – That dream! Put it on your vision board. Where do you want to be in 5 years, how will that make you feel? How will obtaining certain things are participating in specific experiences change your life?
How do you want to impact others lives? What is the time frame you want to achieve all of this in?
Search for and compile visual representations of your dream life
This is the fun part! First you’ll need to decide if you want to make a digital using Canva or a physical vision board. Once you decide that it will be easier to figure out where to pull your various elements from. I know some people use magazines to create their vision boards, but I find that magazines don’t often have exactly what I want. Pinterest is a great resource for finding more inspiration for your dream life.
You can search Pinterest (or regular google images), and download pictures from there and print them if you want to make a physical board. This Year I’ve decided to find the pictures I want and make my vision board in Canva. I will print it from there. I find it easier to manipulate the design layout with doing it in Canva.
Get very specific and personalize each element
Now that I have mentioned Canva, this brings me to another point that you should personalize your elements as much as possible. And what does this mean? Well, if you plan on creating a successful T-shirt business, then have a mock up of someone wearing one of your designs. If you want to pay off a student loan, have a screen capture that looks like your account being paid off. Or if you want to headline a conference, make a program or poster that has your name in it.
You want your vision board to be as specific as possible so that your brain knows exactly what you’re working for.
You can also choose words, don’t limit it to pictures
I love positive affirmations! So much that I have an entire blog post all about some of my favorite affirmations linked here. Think about how you want to feel from achieving some of your goals. Do you want to feel Confident, Joyful, Proud, Accomplished, like a CEO or a Boss? Spell it out so it is plain to see.
How to Use a Vision Board
Display it some where you will actually see it
I have mine framed and hung up in my office space. I don’t just have it folded and tucked away in a drawer! You need to see what you’re working towards, every single day. I do believe that your goals and ambitions are personal so find a happy medium between letting everyone know what you’re working on and being able to have your goals in sight.
You can also take a picture of it and have it on your phone.
Update your vision board as your goals and dreams change
The only constant in life is change! You may have decided that you wanted a corner office in corporate America, but then you all of the sudden found your passion in entrepreneurship — and that is totally okay! Always adjust your goals to what you are truly passionate about pursuing.
Take time to visualize your best life
Taking time to actually visualize is probably one of my favorite parts of my day. I like to take the time to be grateful for life I currently have and also be grateful for the life I’m working towards. I can get so excited when I think about the impact I have and how many people I can potentially help when I operate in my purpose.
You need to really connect with everything you see on your vision board
When you look at the words and pictures on your vision board, you need to really connect with it. They should make you feel some kind of way. Inspired, excited, maybe even nervous (but the good kind of nerves) because everything you want you can actually obtain.
Do Vision Boards Work?
The short answer to this question is they work, if you do! It’s honestly crazy when I look at my vision board and I can literally cross off so many things that are already up there. I’m excited to update my vision board as my goals and dreams have grown and I am continuing to reach for more. I also love to look at my vision board because it helps to ground me and remember that the things I currently have, I didn’t always I have. My vision board reminds me that I can work towards anything that I want in life.
