I am so excited to share with you our new cavapoo puppy Kaptain! We’ve had him for about a month and a half now, and it has certainly been an interesting time! I’ve grown up with dogs but I’ve never actually raised a puppy…Meaning all of this potty training, teething, and vet visits are totally new to me! I figured before I give you the inside scoop on what it really takes to get and raise a puppy in a separate post, I’d introduce you to him! If you love looking at cute puppies on IG, be sure to follow him on IG @KaptaintheCavapoo I know I’m slightly biased but I think he’s a pretty adorable pup–I love his white paws or his little socks as everyone says.
Also, if you just got a puppy or a dog, I have a full list describing everything you need for them linked here!
Kaptain Chico Gooding
Chico was his given name, so we figured we’d include it 🙂
DOB:
7/30/2018
Breed:
Cavapoo. What is a Cavapoo puppy? Well, his parents are a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Toy Poodle
Expected Weight:
10-12 lbs **Update: At 1 Years Old he is 18lbs! He has grown to be the perfect size for us!
When did we get him?
At 9 weeks old, on September 30th!
How did you pick his name?
I wanted a fun dog name, but not something traditional like Fido or Spot. We didn’t want a regular human name like Tom or Susan. I haven’t ever met a dog named Kaptain, so I thought it was unique enough without being something random like Skittles lol. And we just liked it with a “K” because it was a little different. We actually had his name picked out long before we ever got a dog, we always referred to our future dog as “Kaptain.”
Why did we get a cavapoo puppy?
My Husband, Selwyn, is mildly allergic to dogs so we knew in order for us to get a dog and that he could actually breathe around it would have to be some kind of poodle mix. We live in a city area in an apartment and figured it would be best to get a smaller dog that didn’t necessarily need a huge yard to get exercise in. When searching for an apartment, we knew we wanted to get a dog and wanted to live in a dog-friendly area, I share my apartment searching tips here! We also wanted a small dog that would be good for traveling.
What is Kaptain’s personality like?
He is very high energy, and super friendly! Kaptain wants to say hi to anything that moves and particularly loves children. He is really smart and persistent so he figures out a lot of things on his own. He has also been catching on to commands and learning his name fairly quickly. Kaptain is highly food motivated so he will do whatever it takes to earn a treat.
Kaptain is also very vocal and sometimes a little sassy. If he is thirsty or wants to play longer he will let you know! To an extent, I appreciate him communicating his needs with us. If he can learn to tell us when he needs to go potty that would be even better!
How is Potty Training going?
The first week was a struggle! Selwyn and I were in shambles lol. Even in the second week we were still just barely making it. Fortunately, there is only one night I can recall where he woke us up for a 3am let out. For the most part, he sleeps through the night and generally wakes up between 7-8am.
We’ve had to become more patient and really learn him to understand his cues for when he will have to go outside. A lot of his early accidents when we had to basically puppy pad the living room were honestly from us just not recognizing the timing and the signs for when he had to go. But also–there were times when he was just stubborn and refused to do his jobs outside after being out for an hour only to come back and go in his crate 🙂
Now, we have really cut down on accidents! He’s had maybe one in the last week inside the apartment. We currently have to carry him outside because he can’t be trusted to not go on the carpet outside of the apartment/in the elevators. It is a long way down and he already fooled me once lol
Who watches him during the workday?
Fortunately, I work from home on most days and get to hang out with Kaptain! He mostly sleeps during the day and wants to party at night. Did you know that puppies sleep 16-18 hours a day?! If we aren’t home then he is in his crate for the time being but never for extended periods of time because he is so young.
What does he like to do?
Kaptain loves to nibble on anything–toys, shoes, people, furniture. Basically anything at his eye level. He really likes to play, right now he loves to play with his Kong balls that his friend Bojangles got for him. If you want another adorable pup to follow, Bojangles goes on all the Adventures! You can check him out on Instagram here.
I can always tell when Kaptain has gotten into something because he will take off running into one of his hiding places. His two favorite are either under our bed or under one of our chairs in the living room. He also really enjoys being chased and playing with other dogs.
Struggles so Far?
Yes–Getting him potty trained as I mentioned before, and then his teething! At first, his puppy bites were so soft and gentle, but now his little teeth are sooo sharp. We’re working on redirecting him to bite on toys instead. Not only are we redirecting him, but we also tell him “No Bite” or “Be Nice” this seems to work and he is slowly catching on. He also listens to this command from others which is great because we want him to know what is acceptable play.
